Génesis y metamorfosis en la noosferaGenesis and metamorphosis in the noosphere
Las ideas nacen al margen, mutan y también muerenIdeas are born at the margins, mutate and also die
In the noosphere the truest idea does not win, but the one that best answers the need to believe: the selection of ideas does not reward truth.
He engages with Popper, who proposed that theories evolve by quasi-Darwinian selection, and with Kuhn, who saw mutations at their core, the paradigm; he accepts combining both, but warns that this logic only governs the scientific sphere and rarely the rest of the noosphere (p. 156).
He also rejects the law of three stages, mythical, religious and rational: old forms do not vanish but parasitize modern ones (p. 156). To show how an idea is born and transformed, he chooses three European cases: Christianity, the great transformation that produced modern science and humanism, for which he refers to his own 1987 book, and Marxism, analyzed in detail (pp. 157–160).
Nacer al margenBorn at the margins
The new appears in the noosphere as in the biosphere: marginal, random, threatened, sometimes clandestine. It must take root and find favorable conditions. Then a deviant branch splits from orthodoxy, organizes itself around new core principles, spreads like an epidemic and, in the end, the old orthodoxy cracks and disintegrates.
Revoluciones nuclearesCore revolutions
The great noological revolutions do not change details: they blow up the core of the system they came from and found a new one. Thus Christianity, born Jewish, turns the collective religion of the chosen people into a religion of individual and universal salvation. And the victorious deviation in turn becomes orthodoxy and hunts down its own heresies.
Outside science, surviving proves nothing. A religion that imposes its orthodoxy eliminates its rivals; a doctrine is fitter to last than a theory. There is selective pressure in favor of ideas that blind and manipulate, because they suit us or deceive well. The false idea can defeat the true one.
Two forms fuse and beget a third, which then turns into something different: this is how ideas are born through schism and synthesis, and how they mutate from revision to revision.
Victorious Christianity wipes out the pagan religions, yet it also absorbs some of their festivals and myths under the protection of the saints. Morin sees a law of metamorphosis here: the new idea destroys the old one and absorbs it at the same time. Many celebrations you live each year carry layers of earlier beliefs.
Biológico · el cordero que erosionó el MagrebBiological · the lamb that eroded the Maghreb
An idea can also transform soils and landscapes. According to Morin, it was not so much Islam that adapted to the Maghreb as the Maghreb that adapted to Islam: mass raising of lambs for the sacrifice of Eid al-Kabir caused deforestation and erosion, and shaped the geo-economic conditions of those societies.
Social · de Marx al marxismo-leninismoSocial · from Marx to Marxism-Leninism
A dissident branch of Hegelianism, Marxism becomes party ideology, softens into reformism and then hardens with Bolshevism. After the failure of revolution in Europe, Marxism-Leninism is born, with socialism in one country and the cult of Lenin and Stalin. From core revision to core revision, deviation becomes orthodoxy.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es un progreso linealIt is not linear progress
There is no law of succession leading from myth to religion and from religion to reason. Archaic specters and doubles are still alive in the modern city, and old forms find new life inside ideologies. The noosphere accumulates and mixes; it does not replace in order.
Morin uses biological metaphors but denies that the survival of an idea measures its worth. Quasi-Darwinian selection works, within limits, among scientific theories that submit to testing. Elsewhere, what gets selected is what consoles, promises or imposes itself by force.
No es puro reflejo socialIt is not a mere social reflection
Ideas are born in historical, economic and political conditions, but they are not their echo. Once organized, they have a logic of their own and can revolutionize those very conditions. Morin asks us not to dissolve doctrines into their social setting and to see them as organized systems that disorganize and reorganize.
We would need to study noospheric symbioses, ruptures, transmutations and metamorphoses; we would need to study the migrations and epidemics of ideas; we would need to study, lastly, their senescence, their resurrections, their final deaths. Myths and ideologies also die. The great religions will die.Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 156Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 156 (free translation)
Morin has just shown that a religion can remake the landscape where it takes root. Instead of a closed theory, he sketches here the program of a science that does not yet exist: a natural history of ideas that follows their births, contagions, aging and deaths.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin writes bluntly that the great religions will die. To a believer this sounds like a hostile prophecy; to a rationalist, like comfort. But the same analysis reaches reason itself: theories, doctrines and secular ideologies are also born, age and die. No one stands outside the natural history of ideas, not even the one writing it.
If the false idea can defeat the true one because it suits better or deceives better, confidence that truth eventually prevails is put in doubt. Morin, who was a communist militant and later criticized it, knows that an illusion can deny for decades what the facts deny, and that being right is not enough to win.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Speaking of epidemics of ideas is now everyday language: people talk of viral content and contagion on social networks. Morin's approach adds what is usually missing: spread says nothing about truth, and an idea that spreads very fast may be precisely the one that best answers the need for belief, hope or certainty.
Political and religious movements are still born by schism: a minority current splits off, presents itself as the true orthodoxy and accuses the parent of betrayal. Reading these processes with Morin's sequence, marginality, incubation, epidemic spread and new orthodoxy, helps us not to take them as mere personal quarrels.
