Every system of ideas guards its core and has a blind zone within it; what sets a theory apart from a doctrine is whether it accepts its own death.
De dónde viene: de la célula al dogmaWhere it comes from: from the cell to dogma
To show its closure he relies on Max Weber and the monist tendency of theories, on Jacques Schlanger (p. 134) and on Lupasco, who defined ideology as a system of ideas that resists information (p. 139).
For the tendencies of every system he calls on Comte and Chesterton on dogma (p. 139), on Mauss and the omnipotence of ideas in magic, on Wittgenstein and on Whitehead's misplaced concreteness (p. 140), on Holton and scientists' themata (p. 138), and on Freud and Ferenczi, who compared the great philosophical systems to paranoid delusion (p. 143).
Núcleo duro e inmunologíaHard core and immunology
Every system of ideas organizes and defends itself. Its core, made of unprovable postulates and hidden principles, decides what is true and what is meaningless. That is why it has a blind zone: it cannot criticize its own axioms. Faced with a dangerous datum it triggers defenses that reject it, and if its logic cannot absorb it, rationality turns into rationalization.
Teoría y doctrinaTheory and doctrine
A theory recognizes that its axioms are unprovable, depends on the empirical world and accepts criticism under shared rules: it lives by metabolizing reality. A doctrine holds its principles as evident forever, selects only what confirms it and turns opposing arguments into attacks on whoever makes them. One changes its variables; the other armors every one of its concepts.
Ideo-mitosIdeo-myths
It was believed that history would move from myth to reason. Morin shows the opposite: myths nested in the heart of abstract ideas. When cognitive truth and ethical truth coagulate in an ideology, its ruling ideas become sacred. Thus Reason became a goddess, science claimed a mission of salvation, and scientific materialism became an earthly religion.
A hard core surrounded by protective layers that repel foreign particles: this is how every system of ideas defends itself, and the thicker the layers, the closer it comes to doctrine.
Morin gives an example of a blind zone: the principles of current scientific theories prevent them from conceiving that a substance diluted to the extreme and given in infinitesimal doses could have a therapeutic effect, as homeopathy claims. He does not judge the matter; he shows that the core decides in advance what can be perceived and what stays out.
Físico · un universo hecho de matemáticasPhysical · a universe made of mathematics
Physics does not escape idealism. Pushing to the limit Galileo's phrase about the book of Nature written in mathematical language, Eddington came to think that the universe is made entirely of mathematics. Whitehead called this misplaced concreteness: taking abstractions for concrete realities. Matter, energy and information were reified too.
Social · cristianos y marxistasSocial · Christians and Marxists
Marxism and Christianity fought each other on every continent. But in Latin America, where the Church was bound to forces oppressing the poor, the Christian idea of fraternity and the socialist one attracted each other, and a symbiotic ideology was born: liberation theology. Relations between ideas depend on their cultural and historical ecosystem.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es cuestión de contenidoIt is not a matter of content
The difference between theory and doctrine often lies not in the ideas, but in the openness or closure of their organization. The same Marxism could be a debated theory in the university and an irrefutable doctrine in the sect or the party. The psychocultural ecosystem decides.
No es racionalidadIt is not rationality
Rationality and rationalization grow from the same trunk, the search for coherence. But rationality stays open to what resists logic, while rationalization locks reality into the system's logic and believes it owns it. That is why ideologies born of criticism produce new dogmas.
No es solo un errorIt is not just an error
Theories, doctrines, philosophies and ideologies should not be judged only as truths or errors, nor only as products of a class or a society. They are also noological beings that feed on mental and cultural substance, and some, charged with myth, can subjugate and possess those who uphold them.
Thus theory accepts criticism within the philosophical frame, but where it must admit the principle of its biodegradability is within the scientific frame: an open theory is a theory that accepts the idea of its own death.Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 136Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 136 (free translation)
It closes the section "Theory of theory". Morin has just explained that theory is open because it depends on the empirical world and on the pluralist rules of the philosophical and scientific communities. Right after, he describes doctrine, which rejects all challenge and holds itself eternal.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Not even science is safe. Morin holds that every theory, including the most open, has a core of unprovable postulates and a blind zone, and that in the history of science theories resist dogmatically like doctrines until a long series of proofs and a rival theory dislodge them. A theory surrenders, but it does not commit suicide.
Morin admits that doctrines have a more intense and fiery life than theories: they attract the need for certainty, the desire for the absolute, and renew their vigor by reciting their founders. Open theories offer less comfort. This explains why the most closed ideas often win followers more easily than those that accept doubt.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The resistance to information Lupasco described can be seen today in debates on vaccines, climate or elections: every contrary datum is filtered, reinterpreted or blamed on a conspiracy. Morin's distinction offers a practical question for any position, one's own or others': what evidence would it accept in order to change, and who can criticize it without being treated as an enemy?
Philosophy of science speaks of the hard core and protective belt of research programs, and scientific practice of replication and peer review as devices that keep theories open. Morin reminds us that this openness depends on a fragile ecosystem: pluralist communities, debate without exclusion and shared rules.
