Myths, gods and ideas are born in our heads, but once born they have an existence of their own: they feed us, serve us and rule us.

De dónde viene: entre la supra-realidad y la sub-realidadWhere it comes from: between supra-reality and sub-reality

Morin starts from a pendulum (pp. 109–111). On one side, the philosophies that grant the Idea a ruling reality: Plato, Pythagoras' Numbers, Hegel's Idea-as-Subject, Jung's archetypes, the structuralism for which myths think themselves. On the other, those who reduce it to an instrument or a superstructure: Kant's transcendental dialectic, sociologism, Marxism.

To escape the pendulum he gathers several paths (pp. 111–115): the mathematician Hermite and the existence of numbers, Frege, Popper and his third world, the term noosphere Teilhard coined in the 1920s, the ecology of ideas of Bateson and Vickers, Wojciechowski's knowledge construct, and above all the physicist Pierre Auger and Jacques Monod, who saw in ideas a living kingdom.

Realidad objetiva, autonomía relativaObjective reality, relative autonomy

The first error is to believe that dreams, gods and ideas have physical existence; the second, to deny them any reality. The noosphere emerges from the interactions that weave a culture and acquires qualities of its own that act back on them. It is not matter, though it rests on brains, as information rests on a signal: it is another kind of reality.

Just as the biosphere ranges from the virus to the sequoia, the noosphere ranges from phantasms to symbols, from myths to theories. Morin distinguishes almost gaseous states, dreams that soon dissipate, from solid entities such as doctrines and religions that live for millennia. He also separates cosmo-bio-anthropomorphic beings, gods and genies, from logomorphic ones, systems of ideas.

Individual minds supply desires, fears and dreams; society supplies language, knowledge and rules; the noosphere gives shape to beings that then regenerate both. Each instance is the ecosystem of the other two, means and end at once. There is mutual symbiosis, parasitism and exploitation, never balanced: sometimes the gods are so thirsty they feed like vampires on their faithful.

A sphere of luminous points floats above a surface of heads and feeds on them: ideas do not exist without minds, yet above them they form a realm with a life of its own.

Donde se ve el tercer reinoWhere the third realm shows

Cotidiano · la novela que vuelve a vivirEveryday · the novel that comes alive again

A novel is born from its author and culture, but it takes on a life of its own: its characters become autonomous and stir love, hatred or tears in us. Morin recalls War and Peace and the line "Madame Bovary, c'est moi". Each reader regenerates it with their own variations. That is how all noospheric life works, on a small scale.

Físico · una materia casi vacíaPhysical · an almost empty matter

How can something immaterial exist? Morin recalls that matter itself is barely material: an atom is 99 percent empty. And information is immaterial even though it travels on a physical carrier. In the same way, myths, gods and ideas take concrete form in the chemical-electrical exchanges of the brain, in sounds and in writing.

Social · Atenas y sus diosesSocial · Athens and its gods

The great gods live for millennia as long as they have human psychic energy as fuel. But their omnipotence has limits: democratic Athens in the fifth century reduced its gods to protecting the city, without leaving them in command, and European philosophy ended up dissolving the God who had covered the Middle Ages.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Societies domesticate individuals with the myths and ideas that in turn domesticate societies, but individuals can, reciprocally, domesticate their ideas and their myths.
Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 127Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 127 (free translation)

Morin has just presented the psychosphere/sociosphere/noosphere trinity and its mutual subjugation. Here he introduces the way out: within that game of subjugation and parasitism there is room for a symbiotic, emancipatory search, because the individual can use liberating ideas against those that dominate it.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

The noosphere is no doubt a means for human beings, Morin writes, but it is not known whether human beings are not also a means for the noosphere. That is why he understands Hegel making humans the instrument through which the Idea is realized. The question stays open, and it is uncomfortable: perhaps we are not only the owners of our ideas, but also their food.

If ideas have a life of their own, who is thinking when we think? Morin admits that ideas manipulate us more than we manipulate them, and that they use our interests as much as we use them. Even in his own book he sees little devils pushing him to write. The thinker's autonomy is thus shared with what he thinks.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

The planetary noosphere Morin saw expanding has become tangible on the internet: networks multiplying images, slogans and stories at unprecedented speed, with the dissemination and waste he compared to spores. His paradox also holds: what connects us separates us, when each group is wrapped in its own haze of symbols.

Studies of narratives, disinformation and the contagion of ideas speak today of viruses, epidemics and information ecosystems, sometimes unaware they echo Auger, Monod and Morin. The trinity proposal is still useful: it is not enough to study the message, the platform or the user's psychology separately; one has to see how they co-produce each other.
