New ideas are not born in a vacuum or by decree: they need dialogue, regulated conflict and cultural warmth to turn from deviation into trend.
De dónde viene: de Atenas a la biología molecularWhere it comes from: from Athens to molecular biology
Toma de Gregory Bateson (1936) la idea de que una pequeña desviación puede desencadenar cismogénesis y morfogénesis (p. 36), y de Julian Jaynes la imagen de las dos cámaras del espíritu (p. 39).Morin looks to history for the conditions that weaken imprinting: the law of dialogue instituted in fifth-century Athens, the trade in ideas of the Renaissance (p. 32), the closing of the school of Athens in 529 (p. 34). He takes from Gregory Bateson (1936) the idea that a small deviation can trigger schismogenesis and morphogenesis (p. 36), and from Julian Jaynes the image of the mind's two chambers (p. 39).
He draws on Gerald Holton's study of Fermi (p. 37), on Montesquieu and the causes of Rome's greatness and decline (p. 43), on Lucien Goldmann on Pascal (p. 50) and on Moscovici on discoverers from outside their discipline (p. 54). He closes with two appendices on Greek philosophy and the birth of science, where he discusses Weber, Merton, Needham and Habermas (pp. 57–63).
Dialógica y comercio de ideasDialogic and the trade in ideas
The first condition is a plurality of viewpoints, which exists potentially in every society. It is activated by the trade in ideas, above all with other cultures and with the past, and by conflict between conceptions. But that conflict needs a rule that keeps it on the plane of dialogue and prevents battles of ideas from becoming physical battles.
Morin carries a physical notion over to culture. Where there is heat, mechanical determinism gives way to a statistical one, and stability to turbulence and whirlwinds. Cultural warmth is the intensity and multiplicity of exchanges, polemics and confrontations; cold is rigidity and invariance. Dialogic favors warmth, and warmth favors dialogic: that is how the norm relaxes.
De desviación a tendenciaFrom deviation to trend
In every society there are potential deviants. When they can express themselves, a new idea first feeds on a micro breeding ground, finds followers, gains legitimacy and ends up creating its own norm. Thus the scientific mentality, at first marginal and cautious, became within two centuries the new orthodoxy of knowledge, though of a new kind, because it carries debate within it.
Bubbles rise in a warm medium; some deviant ones grow and multiply as the heat rises: this is how the breeding grounds form where a new idea finds room.

Cotidiano · los Mozart que no fueronEveryday · the Mozarts who never were
For a talent to express itself it takes chance, protectors, encounters and favorable conditions. That is why, says Morin, there have been so many little Mozarts who never had the chance to learn music theory or the piano. History only remembers the lucky ones, like the monk Mendel, recognized after his death.

Nothing suggested that Italy would reach the front rank of nuclear physics in the 1930s. It took Fermi's intuition in 1934, which convinced his students and the minister Corbino, whose protection turned Rome into a great center of discovery. But it only bore fruit because it entered the worldwide trade in ideas.
Social · Viena y WeimarSocial · Vienna and Weimar
Golden ages do not require complete freedom. Vienna before 1914 lived its cultural splendor in the very decline of the empire, as a crossroads of cultures. Weimar Berlin combined great freedom with national, social and economic crisis. Morin concludes that not only critical thinking is fertile, but also thinking born of crisis.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es libertad totalIt is not total freedom
A breeding ground does not require imprinting, sacred truths or dogmas to vanish. A dialogic play among several spheres of norms is enough, provided none crushes the others. Free inquiry can survive even under enlightened princes or on islands within authoritarian societies.
No es progreso aseguradoIt is not guaranteed progress
Disorders, crises and ruptures are ambivalent. They can spark invention and the search for new solutions, but also scapegoats, providential saviors and authoritarian regressions. That is why, barring an annihilating cataclysm, one can never predict whether a crisis will fertilize or destroy intellectual life.
No es genio solitarioIt is not solitary genius
Creation is individual, but it only happens under cultural conditions that are at least not wholly prohibitive. Great thinkers are not produced by their era: they emerge in the breaches of determinism, and are often cultural hybrids, exiles or marginal figures who feel a fault line in their belonging.
There is a looped interdependence between the retreat of determinism (of imprinting), the development of cognitive autonomy and the appearance of innovative conceptions. This cultural loop forms a whirlwind and breeding grounds.Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 37Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 37 (free translation)
After going over dialogic, warmth, deviations and the case of Fermi, Morin finally defines breeding grounds: settings favorable at once to the relative autonomy of minds, the emergence of new ideas and mutual criticism. The sentence sums up the circular causality of the whole chapter.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
A breeding ground cannot be made at will. Morin insists on the role of chance: encounters, protectors, strokes of fortune and misfortune that nobody plans. For those who design research or educational institutions the idea is unsettling, because they can only gather favorable conditions, never guarantee that something new will come of them, nor know who it will be.
Every successful deviation becomes a norm. Science, born as a deviation, is now orthodoxy; the modern cult of the new transfigures the deviant into the innovative and creates a new conformism. Morin warns that truly original minds remain, at first, troublesome deviants even by the official criteria of innovation.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Universities and research centers today talk about interdisciplinarity and innovation ecosystems. Morin offers a precise warning: discoveries tend to spring up in the no man's lands between disciplines, like molecular biology, which in France started in a corner of the Pasteur Institute with no chair of its own. Rigid borders cool the broth.
The autonomy of science remains fragile. Morin recalls that Stalinism subjected genetics to doctrine, with Lysenko's failure in agriculture, and that totalitarianism respected the autonomy only of the natural sciences useful to its power. Every time a political power decides which scientific truth is convenient, the broth cools.
