Conformism is not a lack of culture: imprinting and normalization grow with it, even at the summits of learning.

De dónde viene: del pajarillo de Lorenz a la culturaWhere it comes from: from Lorenz's chick to culture

Morin takes the term imprinting from Konrad Lorenz, who proposed it for the irreversible mark left by a young animal's first experiences, like the chick that follows the first living being passing by its nest (p. 28). In a note he recalls that Andersen had already told it in his own way in the ugly duckling, and he carries the idea over to human culture.

He borrows from Jean Hamburger the phrase thought pressures for normalization in liberal societies (p. 29), and from Feyerabend the idea that the appearance of absolute truth results from an absolute conformism (p. 30).

Knowledge bears the weight of determinations of place, period, class, caste, profession, sect and clan, which wrap around and reinforce one another. To them are added those internal to knowledge itself: paradigms, which govern the logic of discourse. Together they impose what must be known, how to know it and what not to know, and they lock thought within norms and prohibitions.

Culture marks humans from birth: first the family, then the school, later the university or the profession. That mark is inscribed in the brain in early childhood and irreversibly shapes the way of knowing and acting. It produces selective inattention to whatever contradicts our beliefs and the eliminative rejection of any information that does not fit.

If imprinting gives conformism its shape, normalization imposes it. It can be brutal, like the physical elimination of heretics and deviants, or soft, like the intimidations of liberal societies, which reduce dissenters to silence, inattention or ridicule. It sets what is important, valid, true or stupid, and marks the words that cannot be spoken.

Donde se ve la huellaWhere the mark shows

Cotidiano · la taberna y el cóctelEveryday · the tavern and the cocktail party

Against the pretensions of intellectuals, Morin holds that conformism is not a sign of low culture. There are more personal opinions at a tavern counter than at a literary cocktail party, because the less educated receive a weaker imprinting and normalization. Molière was already mocking the arrogant conformism of his pedantic scholars.

Biológico · el pajarillo y las sinapsisBiological · the chick and the synapses

Lorenz's chick follows the first living being it sees as if it were its mother. In humans, the cultural mark is inscribed through the selective stabilization of synapses in early childhood. From then on, says Morin, imprinting makes one incapable of seeing anything other than what must be seen.

Social · alucinaciones colectivasSocial · collective hallucinations

Imprinting reaches visual perception itself. Morin speaks of collective cultural hallucinations: the thousands of believers who saw the sun spin at Fátima, but also eminent academics and Nobel laureates who saw the liberation of humankind where its enslavement was taking place. Blindness that hides joins hallucination that invents.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Por ello podemos ver, en las altas esferas intelectuales y universitarias, soberbios ejemplos de conformismo, que sólo serán reconocidos como tales pasadas algunas generaciones.…imprinting and normalization increase at the same time as culture increases. That is why we can see, in the upper intellectual and academic spheres, superb examples of conformism, which will only be recognized as such after a few generations.
Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 28Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 28 (free translation)

In the second chapter, right after introducing Lorenz's imprinting, Morin dismantles the idea that conformism belongs to the poorly educated. He grants that intellectual liberalism allows deviations to be voiced, but holds that culture, far from protecting us, intensifies the mark and the norm.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

The most uncomfortable thing is that the mark is irreversible and engraved before we can choose. If the first inscriptions shape the way of knowing forever, intellectual freedom starts at a disadvantage. Morin does not soften it: learning eliminates other possible ways of knowing, and we do not know what we lost because that loss was erased too.

The thesis wounds the pride of the learned: the more education, the more conformism. Degrees, readings and conferences do not immunize; they can armor. Morin points to scholars and Nobel laureates who mistook slavery for liberation. The question remains open for any educated reader: which of your certainties will be seen tomorrow as the conformism of an era?

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

On social media, normalization no longer needs a tribunal: collective scorn, viral mockery or the silence of those afraid to step out of line is enough. The thought pressures Morin described in liberal societies now operate at great speed, and affect academic communities as much as groups of friends.

The psychology of confirmation bias has shown in the laboratory what Morin called selective inattention and eliminative rejection: we tend to ignore what contradicts our beliefs and to discredit the source rather than the idea. His contribution is to tie that mechanism to the culture that imprints it and the norm that polices it.
