Classical science triumphed by separating and reducing; today that same formula keeps it from seeing what it can no longer sweep away.

De dónde viene: de Descartes a la tecnocienciaWhere it comes from: from Descartes to technoscience

Sigue su eco en la claridad cartesiana, en el aforismo de Wittgenstein, en el principio de razón suficiente de Leibniz y en el positivismo lógico, su estadio supremo (pp. 230–232).Morin dates the birth of the classical paradigm to the split between science and philosophy in the seventeenth century and sums it up with Jean Perrin's formula about the complicated visible and the simple invisible (pp. 229–230). He follows its echo in Cartesian clarity, in Wittgenstein's aphorism, in Leibniz's principle of sufficient reason and in logical positivism, its supreme stage (pp. 230–232).

Para entender cómo cae un paradigma vuelve a la revolución que va de Copérnico a Kepler y Galileo, con Tycho Brahe y Aristarco de Samos, y cita a Bourguignon y Feyerabend (pp. 238–239).For the alliance of knowledge and power he cites the maxim shared by Machiavelli, Descartes and Taylor, and Heidegger's idea of a technology that imprisons nature (p. 233). To understand how a paradigm falls he returns to the revolution running from Copernicus to Kepler and Galileo, with Tycho Brahe and Aristarchus of Samos, and quotes Bourguignon and Feyerabend (pp. 238–239).

Exclusión y reducciónExclusion and reduction

Classical science expels from true reality everything that makes up complexity: the subject, disorder, chance, qualities, autonomies. And it orders wholes to be broken down into their elementary units. To this it adds an internal disjunction that isolates sciences and disciplines, arbitrarily cutting their object out of the interwoven fabric of the real.

Science manipulates in order to verify and technology verifies in order to manipulate. In two centuries this pair moves from the periphery to the heart of society: rationalism extends into rationalization, empiricism into pragmatism, specialization into hyperspecialization and the reign of experts. That is why the classical paradigm can no longer be separated from the one that organizes our societies.

Estamos en el mar del CoralWe are in the Coral Sea

The crisis is on every front, but the fossil paradigm does not finish breaking and the new one has not taken root. Morin likens the moment to the 1942 battle of the Coral Sea: scattered fights in the fog, no clear victor, and yet an imperceptible turn. We do not know if there will be other Midways; let us hope we do not go through a Hiroshima.

Tres terrenosThree grounds

Cómo resiste y cómo cae un paradigmaHow a paradigm resists and how it falls

Nothing easier, Morin says, than following an ever subtler argument when speaker and listener share the premises. Changing a variable costs nothing; changing the parameters costs a lot; changing the principle that sets them is hardest of all, because it drags down the whole building and sometimes the prestige of whoever lived in it.

Físico · del círculo a la elipsePhysical · from circle to ellipse

Tycho Brahe proposed that the planets circle the Sun and the Sun circles the motionless Earth: a fix to save the paradigm. It took the move from the perfect circle to Kepler's ellipse and nearly a century, from Copernicus to Galileo. Aristarchus of Samos had glimpsed it centuries earlier, but it remained a solitary hypothesis.

Social · divide y reinarásSocial · divide and rule

The same maxim served Machiavelli to master the city, Descartes to master intellectual difficulty and Taylor to govern the worker's movements in the factory. Morin sees in it the mark of the classical paradigm branching through politics, thought and labor: a power that rules by dividing.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
…tenemos que comprender que la revolución se juega hoy no tanto en el terreno de las ideas buenas o verdaderas opuestas en una lucha a vida o muerte a las ideas malas y falsas, sino en el terreno de la complejidad del modo de organización de las ideas.…we must understand that the revolution is played out today not so much on the ground of good or true ideas opposed in a life-and-death struggle to bad and false ideas, but on the ground of the complexity of the mode of organization of ideas.
Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 244Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 244 (free translation)

These are the closing lines of the chapter on the paradigm, after the diagnosis of the crisis and the image of the Coral Sea. Morin has just warned that the Gordian knot is neither untied by intelligence alone nor cut with the sword, and he shifts the struggle from contents to the way of thinking.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin admits a vicious circle: sociocultural conditions must change for consciousness to change, and consciousness must change for those conditions to change. No logic resolves it. All he offers is to move forward without a path, with patience within impatience, knowing the task is crucial, uncertain and hazardous. There is no guarantee of arrival.

The classical paradigm is not defended by arguments alone. The doctrines it generates act as guard dogs, and its fall threatens the status, careers and prestige of those who live off the established belief. Whoever proposes another principle faces not only censorship but hatred. Morin does not idealize the scientific community as a forum of pure reasons.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Ecological, health or climate crises show problems that fit no single discipline, while universities and ministries remain organized in sealed compartments. Morin's diagnosis keeps its edge: interdisciplinary projects multiply, but the principle of hyperspecialization that builds the compartments is rarely discussed.

Management by indicators, which measures what can be quantified and leaves out whatever does not fit in a number, extends the classical gesture of eliminating the unmeasurable. Morin does not ask us to give up measurement, but to remember what it excludes: qualities, wholes and the measuring subject, who is also part of what is measured.
