Beneath every theory rules a principle no one states: it picks the concepts, dictates the logic and decides which alternatives exist.

De dónde viene: de la gramática a la historia de las cienciasWhere it comes from: from grammar to the history of science

Luego discute a Thomas Kuhn, que hizo del paradigma la clave de las revoluciones científicas y le dio un sentido a la vez fuerte y vago, y la episteme de Michel Foucault, más radical y amplia (p. 217).Morin traces the word from Plato and Aristotle to the structural linguistics of Hjelmslev and Jakobson, where the paradigmatic axis stands against the syntagmatic one (p. 216). He then discusses Thomas Kuhn, who made the paradigm the key to scientific revolutions and gave it a meaning both strong and vague, and Michel Foucault's episteme, more radical and wider (p. 217).

Para el lazo entre paradigma y sociedad acude a la tripartición indoeuropea de Dumézil y Benveniste (p. 225).He adds Magoroh Maruyama's four mental landscapes, which also apply to aesthetics, ethics and religion (p. 218), and places the paradigm next to the hard core of Lakatos's research programmes and Gerald Holton's themata, without merging it with them (p. 221). For the tie between paradigm and society he turns to the Indo-European tripartition of Dumézil and Benveniste (p. 225).

Selecciona y prescribeIt selects and prescribes

A paradigm contains the governing concepts of intelligibility and the kind of logical relation between them. Order for determinism, Matter for materialism, Structure for structuralism: each governing concept excludes or subordinates its opposite. And it decides whether thinking proceeds by conjunction or disjunction, so that its choice looks like pure logic.

Morin compares it to a virus that, from within DNA, controls the whole program of the cell, except that the paradigm is no intruder but something native to discourse. It is infralogical and supralogical: it controls a logic that in turn reinforces it. The excluded middle, for instance, consolidates the disjunction that makes it look self-evident.

Invisible, luego invulnerableInvisible, hence invulnerable

The paradigm cannot be falsified, it founds the axioms that later legitimize it, excludes whole problems and blinds us to what it excludes. It is never stated as such: it appears only in its examples. That is why it cannot be attacked head-on. Its Achilles' heel lies in deviant individuals and, very occasionally, in revolutions of thought.

A tree visible above and, underground, roots that control it unseen: the theory shows its crown; the buried paradigm decides which way it grows.

Donde el paradigma decide por tiWhere the paradigm decides for you

Cotidiano · el investigador de dos mundosEveryday · the researcher of two worlds

In the lab he is an objectivist who knows everything is determined, human beings included. Back home he sternly scolds his son for making a bad choice, as if freedom existed. Morin describes these daily leaps from one universe to another, which everyone makes constantly without noticing them.

Biológico · ¿el hombre es naturaleza?Biological · are humans nature?

One paradigm includes the human in the natural; another defines the human by excluding nature. They look like enemies, but both obey a deeper one, simplification, which only allows reducing or separating. Neither can think of human beings as natural and cultural at once, implicated in nature and distinct from it.

Social · sacerdotes, guerreros, productoresSocial · priests, warriors, producers

Dumézil found a tripartite principle among Indo-European peoples: spiritual sovereignty, physical force, fertility. It governs at once the gods, the myths and a society ranked into priests, warriors and producers. Morin does not ask which causes which: he sees a loop in which social organization sustains the paradigm that sustains it.

El paradigma no decide el tema, pero decide la alternativa y excluye cualquier tercera posibilidad.…and each person chooses the theme that answers to their intellectual libido. The paradigm does not decide the theme, but it decides the alternative and excludes any third possibility.
Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 221Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 221 (free translation)

Morin has just set the paradigm apart from Holton's themata, the driving ideas that orient a worldview. He lists the alternatives simplification forces on us (matter or mind, continuous or discontinuous, determinism or chance) to show that the freedom to pick a side hides who drew the field.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

If the paradigm is invisible to whoever obeys it, how does Morin know it exists, and how do you know which one rules you? He admits it: it can only be seen through its examples and effects, never head-on. He keeps the notion because of its obscurity, since it points to something sunk in the individual and collective unconscious.

Between paradigms there is incomprehension. Morin cites the 1939 Hitler/Stalin pact: for someone thinking in terms of capitalism versus socialism it was a mere circumstance; for someone thinking in terms of democracy versus totalitarianism it revealed a kinship. Each side sees the other as deceptive or delusional. Dialogue requires admitting we argue not only over data but over frames we did not choose.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

The word paradigm has become common currency in management, advertising and politics, almost always as a synonym for model or trend. Morin gives it back its weight: it is not what one adopts in order to innovate, but what already decides, without notice, which questions fit in a meeting, a classroom or a laboratory.

Polarized debates online often shrink to two boxes presented as the only possible ones. Morin's reading suggests suspecting the frame before the opponent: asking who decided there were only two options and what third possibility was excluded before anyone started talking.
