La lógica soberana y sus límitesSovereign logic and its limits
Usar la lógica sin dejarse gobernar por ellaUsing logic without being ruled by it
Logic is needed to check every step, but thought only moves forward when it knows how to transgress it without abandoning it.
De dónde viene: el sueño de una razón infalible y su caídaWhere it comes from: the dream of an infallible reason and its fall
Sigue la absolutización de esa lógica: Leibniz, Boole, Frege, Russell y Whitehead, Hilbert y su axiomatización, el Círculo de Viena y el primer Wittgenstein, que quisieron purgar el pensamiento de todo lo no verificable (pp. 182–183).Morin starts from Aristotle's Organon and its three axioms: identity, non-contradiction and the excluded middle, which Aristotle limited to the same time and the same relation (pp. 178–179). He follows the absolutization of that logic: Leibniz, Boole, Frege, Russell and Whitehead, Hilbert and his axiomatization, the Vienna Circle and the early Wittgenstein, who wanted to purge thought of everything unverifiable (pp. 182–183).
Dialoga además con Heráclito, Pascal, Hegel, Lupasco, Grize y Castoriadis (pp. 184–201).Then he gathers the cracks: Heisenberg and the wave/particle duality Bohr thought of as complementarity (pp. 184–186), the Cretan paradox and Russell's antinomy (p. 188), Popper and the limits of induction, Gödel's 1931 theorem and Tarski's results on truth (pp. 190–193). He also engages with Heraclitus, Pascal, Hegel, Lupasco, Grize and Castoriadis (pp. 184–201).
Classical science turned Aristotle's three axioms into the foundation of being: whatever did not fit that coherence was left outside logic, the world and reality. With Hilbert and the Vienna Circle came the dream that logic would control science and science would control all thought. That logic works well with what is isolable, mechanical, stable.
Physics met a rationally necessary contradiction: the particle behaves as a wave or as a corpuscle depending on the experiment. The Cretan who says all Cretans lie opened a crack in the syllogism itself. And Gödel showed that a rich formal system contains undecidable statements and cannot prove its own consistency with its own resources alone.
Morin no propone una lógica superior, sino la dialógica: un modo de usar la lógica clásica en cada paso sin someter a ella el movimiento del pensamiento.Gödel and Tarski teach that certain questions of a system can only be answered from a metasystem, which in turn will have its own unanswered questions. Knowledge remains unfinished, but that is why it can go on. Morin does not propose a higher logic, but the dialogic: a way of using classical logic at every step without subjecting the movement of thought to it.
A chain of straight steps, each deduced from the last, moves forward until it hits an undecidable edge; there, instead of stopping, it opens toward a higher level, like Gödel and Tarski's metapoint of view.
If a Cretan says all Cretans lie and tells the truth, he lies; if he lies, he tells the truth. Logic alone cannot leave the circle. Morin proposes a metapoint of view: ask who is speaking, whether a lucid dissident, a slanderer or a joker. One reaches a plausible conclusion, no longer a certainty.
The excluded middle works for simple cases: a non-gaseous body is solid or liquid. But there are viscous substances, colloids and emulsions, and protozoa that belong neither fully to the animal nor to the plant kingdom. For Morin the principle is a parapet: it is abandoned only when the complexity of the problem or empirical verification forces it.
Social · la elección que no se calculaSocial · the choice that cannot be calculated
Morin cites Arrow's theorem, according to which a collective choice cannot be calculated from individual preferences. It is another breach of the same kind as Gödel's: even in a field that looks like pure arithmetic, the logical procedure does not guarantee a result. Deciding together requires more than adding up.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es irracionalismoIt is not irrationalism
Morin does not abandon logic: Aristotle's axioms remain indispensable for checking each statement step by step. What he rejects is their sovereignty. He warns that fleeing logic leads to extravagant delirium, and submitting to it without reservation, to rationalizing delirium.
No es una lógica superiorIt is not a higher logic
Many-valued, modal or paraconsistent logics loosen the classical one and accept contradiction, but they do not overcome it. Hegel's dialectic is a powerful way of thinking, not a logic. Nor is the dialogic: it is a way of using logic according to a paradigm of complexity.
No es relativismoIt is not relativism
That no system can ground itself does not mean anything goes. Morin insists that contradiction is revealing only where empirical-rational thought reaches it inevitably; otherwise every incoherence would pass for a higher truth. Discovering a limit of knowledge is also progress in knowledge.
Reference to logic is necessary for verification. Going beyond logic is necessary for truth.Edgar Morin · El Método 4, p. 212Edgar Morin · Method 4, p. 212 (free translation)
Morin has just asked thought neither to lock itself into logical reification nor to dissolve into the inseparable, but to move in a zigzag: it returns to logic to transgress it, and comes back again. The sentence begins by stating that the use of logic is necessary for intelligibility.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin admits there are no logical or metalogical rules to decide when to accept a contradiction and when to eliminate it. Each must be examined in its singularity. For anyone seeking a safe method this is unsettling: thought becomes an adventure with risk, and whoever takes on contradiction makes a bet that can go wrong.
A perfect internal coherence can be delirium. Morin calls rationalization that thought which fits together flawlessly and yet is divorced from reality. It hurts to admit it, because many of our firmest convictions hold up precisely through their coherence, and not through their contact with experience.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Computing systems perform logical reasoning at enormous speed, and Morin already saw in them proof of the mechanical, anonymous character of logic. Today, as we rely more and more on automatic procedures, his distinction remains useful: logic extends an idea into its consequences, but does not give rise to it.
In public debates a yes-or-no answer is often demanded for questions that admit nuances, and ambiguity is read as weakness. Morin's critique of the absolutized excluded middle helps us see when that alternative is legitimate and when it mutilates the problem, as happens in the intermediate cases he describes.

Beneath logic something deeper is at work, deciding which concepts are joined and which are separated: the underground sovereign.
